The Quinceañera Tradition

A Quinceañera is, in the Latin American culture, the celebration of a woman's fifteenth birthday. It is also know as the transition into womanhood or "coming-of-age".  As tradition, the Quinceañera undergoes a religious ceremony. The ceremony is a very important part in which it provides an opportunity for the Quinceañera's priest to talk about the responsibilities of becoming a woman and helps remind the Quinceañera about her devotion to God. As a custom, the Quinceañera receives gifts by her parents and godparents also known as padrinos. Each gift represents a religious symbolism.

After the ceremony, the Quinceañera is transported by her choosing in a limousine where a celebration is held in the Quinceañera's home or banquet hall. The celebration includes food, music and a choreographed dance which is performed by the Quinceañera and her court. The Quinceañera typically choose close friends to participate in what is called her Court of Honor. The young girls in the court are called "damas" and young men in the court are called "chambelanes". There are several traditions throughout the Quinceañera celebration. One that typically occurs before the Quinceañera and her guests begin to dance is to have the Quinceañera's father or male relative change her flat shoes to high heels. The change in shoes is the symbolism of the Quinceañera's transformation from a young girl to young woman. A waltz is then danced by the father or male relative on the dance floor. Following the special waltz, the Quinceañera's guests join the dance floor and the fun time begins!

Luna Limousine Service has had the honor in sharing this special celebration with many Quinceañeras. Stay tuned to see pictures of Quinceañeras who have used our limousine service.
